Fine Art Portrait Photography in Asheville: Portraits for Families, Children and Couples

Every so often, I wonder if my website gives people the wrong impression of what I do.

Over the years, my work has taken me in many directions. I've photographed weddings, worked with commercial and editorial clients, created personal fine art projects, and exhibited work in galleries. Photography has been a part of my life for more than 50 years, and after all that time, I'm still curious about what a photograph can be and what it can mean.

Today, much of my personal work lives in the world of fine art and narrative photography. It's work that allows me to explore ideas, experiment, and follow my curiosity wherever it leads. But there's another side of my photography that has always been just as important to me: making photographs for people.

I photograph people, too. And I'd love for you to know that you're welcome here.

My approach to portrait photography isn't limited to one look or one way of working. I photograph in both color and black and white, using film and digital cameras depending on the subject, the feeling I'm after, and what best serves the photograph. I have a particular love for black and white, which is often where my personal work finds its voice, but I enjoy the richness and immediacy of color just as much. Sometimes a photograph calls for the timeless simplicity of black and white; other times, color is an essential part of the story. The same goes for film and digital. Each offers its own way of seeing, and I choose the tools that best serve the person, the moment, and the photograph we're making together.

I work with families, children, high school seniors, couples, and individuals to create commissioned portraits that are personal, thoughtful, and a little different from the ordinary. My approach is rooted in the same sensibility that guides my fine art work. I'm interested in light, gesture, connection, personality, and those little moments that reveal something genuine about the person in front of my camera.

That doesn't mean you need to know how to pose, have an elaborate idea, or feel comfortable in front of a camera. You don't need to be a model or have everything figured out before you arrive. That's part of my job.

Some sessions are playful and full of movement. Others are quiet, intimate, or more carefully constructed. Sometimes we make a classic portrait; sometimes we discover something unexpected along the way. The goal isn't to fit you into a particular style. It's to create photographs that feel like you, while bringing an artistic perspective to the process.

And portraits aren't just for families and couples. I also work with musicians, artists, authors, and people across all kinds of professions to create portraits that show a little more of who they are. From creative, personality-filled headshots to portraits for lawyers, physicians, business owners, and other professionals, I believe there's room for something more interesting than the standard headshot. Your portrait doesn't have to look like everyone else's. Whether you need an image for your website, a book jacket, a professional bio, publicity, or simply to put a face to your name, we can create something that feels authentic to you while bringing a thoughtful, artistic perspective to the process.

I believe a portrait can be more than a record of what someone looked like at a particular age or moment in their life. It can hold a feeling, reveal a relationship, or become something meaningful that grows in value as the years pass.

And while I love making personal work, I love working with people just as much. There's something special about being invited into a family's world, photographing a child at a particular stage of life, or creating a portrait of two people who share a history together. These photographs become part of a family's story, and I don't take that responsibility lightly.

Based in Asheville, North Carolina, I continue to make fine art photographs, collaborate on commercial and editorial projects, and pursue the ideas that keep me excited about photography. But my studio is also a place for people who simply want beautiful, meaningful portraits of themselves and the people they love.

You don't have to be a collector or an art enthusiast to work with me. You just have to want photographs made with care, intention, and a little imagination.

So whether you're thinking about portraits of your children, a family session, photographs with your partner, senior portraits, or something entirely your own, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.

After all these years, I'm still a photographer at heart: a curious observer, a dreamer, and someone who believes a photograph is meant to be felt every bit as much as it is seen.

If you've been following my work and didn't realize I make commissioned portraits, consider this your invitation. Let's make something meaningful together.
